Seeking your input into an Indigenous-led public health network

In response to feedback shared by Indigenous participants at the 2024 annual conference, the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is exploring ways to support the creation of a dedicated Indigenous-led public health network. This initiative is intended to meet the needs expressed by Indigenous Peoples working in public practitioners to have an Indigenous-led space for collaboration, mentorship, policy advocacy, and professional development.

For example, one conference participant noted, “We need a space that is truly Indigenous-led, where we can collaborate and support one another without having to navigate settler-dominated systems that don’t understand our realities.” Another shared, “The lack of mentorship and networking opportunities for Indigenous public health professionals means many of us feel isolated in our work—this network is essential.”

CPHA recognizes the vital role that Indigenous Peoples working in public health play in advancing the health and well-being of communities across Canada. They also understand that Indigenous Peoples who work in public health often do so in environments where they face systemic barriers, geographical isolation, and limited opportunities for networking and mentorship.

While CPHA is supporting the organization of this network as part of their commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, it will be led entirely by Indigenous Peoples.

To ensure this network is truly guided by the voices and priorities of those it intends to serve, you are invited to share your thoughts through a short survey.

Your feedback will directly shape the network’s design, priorities, and direction.
