Government of Canada extends Federal Tobacco Control
Strategy
The Honourable Leona Agluqqak, Minister
of Health, announced on March 25 the extension of the Federal
Tobacco Control Strategy for another year. This will allow for an
evaluation of recent initiatives such as those to prevent
youth from starting to smoke, and explore various approaches for future
tobacco control in Canada. CPHA welcomes this news, as the FTCS was due
to end on March 31. The Association will release an updated
position paper on tobacco use and smoking in late April, and
looks forward to providing input to the formulation of a
renewed
federal tobacco control
strategy.

Accredited e-learning
course on Health
Literacy
You talk to your patients, but
do they understand? The CMA presents a new accredited e-learning course
that introduces you to the
concept of health literacy. It gives an overview of current
knowledge about the links between literacy and health outcomes. The
goal is to help you understand how health literacy affects your own
practice or work setting. The course teaches some practical tools
and strategies to identify and address the health literacy needs of
your patients/clients and the barriers that you may inadvertently
create to patient/client understanding.
