History of Public Health
Knowing one’s history is important in informing the present and the future. A century ago, as today, the face of Canada was changing and public health was at the forefront doing good work. During the centenary year, we will explore our public health past not only through this website but through a history book on public health that is now being written, and through a history exhibit that will be unveiled at the centenary conference in June.
Dr. John Hastings, who had a long and distinguished career in public
health, provided an overview of public health history in Canada in a
speech he gave in 1999 on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the Ontario Public Health Association. Dr. Cordell
Neudorf, who
served as the Chair of CPHA’s Board of Directors in 2009 and 2010, picked up
where Dr. Hastings left off, giving us a view of public health over
that last decade. Celebrating the past (PDF: 85k).
The History e-Book
This is Public Health: A Canadian History is an interactive e-book. It’s engaging, richly illustrated, suitable for a broad audience and available as a free download. Canadian public health history is now accessible and easy to share!
The Virtual expo
And some words here? Describing that we exhibited this at the 2010 conference, and have made the display hall into a virtual copy? I have images of the actual display, one of which could be used to the right of this paragraph.
12 Great Achievements
The average lifespan of Canadians has increased by more than 30 years since the early 1900s, and 25 of those years are attributable to advances in public health. There are various public health achievements that led to this remarkable feat.
