Section 3: One-on-One Smoking Cessation Interventions

one-on-one counselling

Section 3 outlines one-on-one counselling techniques for health professionals from brief to more extensive interventions. It is relevant to a broad range of health providers who work with women who smoke. The intervention process combines an approach to counseling based on motivational interviewing techniques including the Stages of Change and the 4 A’s – “ask, advise, assist, arrange.”

Although this section focuses on a one-on-one intervention, many of the concepts are applicable and adaptable to group situations, such as prenatal programs with women living in disadvantaged circumstances.

Handouts are also included in this section.
