SOPHA Program Strategies

SOPHA strengthens the strategic and organizational capacities of PHA partners. This is achieved through a strategy mainly based on four elements:
Project Financing
Core partners submit multi-year proposals for funding over the 2006-2011 SOPHA phase. Each proposal includes an institutional development (strategic planning, management, accounting, monitoring and evaluation etc.) component and a sector specific public health intervention component.
Technical SupportThe SOPHA program offers short-term technical assistance in response to the identified needs of the PHA partners. It is in this manner that the membership of the CPHA plays a significant role. Canadian public health professionals, as CPHA volunteers, work with partner PHAs and share best practices in terms of public health, management and organizational development. These CPHA members share their experience of the Canadian health model and its associated values.
International CollaborationSOPHA facilitates the exchange of ideas and information between program partners and other organizations working in the area of international public health. SOPHA encourages PHA partners to become active members to the World Federation of Public Health Associations, allowing PHA representatives to participate in various international workshops and fora.
Through SOPHA, CPHA also provides support to the Regional Network of Public Health Associations in Francophone Africa (RASPAF) and the East, Central and Southern Africa Public Health Associations (ECSAPHA). These regional organizations represent an opportunity to strengthen the links between the PHAs of countries in the same region, speaking a common language and addressing similar issues and challenges.
Mentoring by SOPHA GraduatesThrough SOPHA, CPHA also provides support to the Regional Network of Public Health Associations in Francophone Africa (RASPAF) and the East, Central and Southern Africa Public Health Associations (ECSAPHA). These regional organizations represent an opportunity to strengthen the links between the PHAs of countries in the same region, speaking a common language and addressing similar issues and challenges.
Fostering an element of mentorship and ‘south-south’ collaboration, SOPHA will continue to involve graduated PHAs to assist with the development of the newly established PHAs in Cameroon and Nicaragua starting in 2008.
